A seventh-grade misfit struggles to find his niche both in school and in his seemingly perfect family. His mother is a woman with a history of severe depression who learns to cope with her inner demons. His little brother is a preschooler struggles with memory loss and the inexplicable — leading his family to fear he is losing his mind.

Since he finds no success in many activities, he finds comfort in playing saxophone in a garage band that is short on members.

However, as his school grades begin to drop, he realizes that he must change.

His favorite movie is “New Guys” , the third film directed by Day-Lewis. The boy is played by Evan Todd, a starry-eyed 12-year-old who was cast for Day-Lewis’ young age. So why would he want to make a film about a single, lonely boy?

In 2006, a United States network television pilot was broadcast entitled “ New Guys.” Despite receiving high ratings, it was never picked up by a network.

This program centered around eight twentysomethings who have only known each other for one year.

In 2008, director Day-Lewis’s film “My Left Foot” was released, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown, a crippled Dublin teenager who learned to write with his feet and wrote two books.

He does his utmost to infuriate his overachieving older sister, and is frequently involved in disastrous escapades, from which one of his best pals usually rescues him. He is often in conflict with two boys who bully him (one a gay Catholic, the other a crippled, athletic boy from the working class).

Christy is unappreciated by his parents (one an alcoholic) and frustrated by his self-destructive habits. The ending of the film, however, shows his health improving (from cerebral palsy to spastic quadriplegia), making him one of the few people to become fully recovered.

“Do you have any idea how many years you and I have been out of this school,” he asks her, upon entering school after being “picked up” by her. She replies: “Maybe three.”
